Consecutive interpreting with the digital recorder

Proof of concept of consecutive interpreting with the digital recorder of a speech by Yanis Varoufakis held at the Diem25 general assembly in Rome on January 7th 2017.

On May 20 I will hold a speech on “The use of digital recorders in consecutive interpreting: tools and techniques” at the ITI Conference in Cardiff. I’m looking forward to meeting whoever may be interested in learning this technique.

At these links you will find some older articles of mine that refer to this technique: Consecutive interpreting without note taking: blasphemy? (2008) and Update on the Simultaneous & Consecutive mode (2008). Since then I have finetuned the technique both from the technical standpoint and as to the strategies it involves.

My LinkedIn Profile

Alessio IacovoniHello and welcome to my website on conference interpreting and translations studies.

I’m Alessio Iacovoni, a bilingual professional Italian ⇄ English interpreter with 18+ years of experience, based in Rome.

Passion is what best describes my relationship with interpreting. In a world where words have turned into mere sound, where they have been deprived of their true meaning, where they are sometimes used over and over till they become hollow, I still like to think of myself as a communicator of sense beyond words.

Ios apps for conference interpreting

This is the first of a series of reviews on some ios apps that I believe can come in very handy to interpreters.

Needless to say, terminology management is an interpreter’s most daunting task. In order for glossaries to be effective, they need to be updated regularly, which can be tedious and time-consuming.

Among the plethora of IOS apps aimed at streamlining the process of managing and learning new terminology, there is one that stands out for its many interesting features, including a unique text-to-speech function that I will expound on further into the review.

The app is called Flashcards Deluxe.

Despite the name, it’s not merely a flashcards program, but a versatile utility that can cater for most terminology management needs. It has features to backup glossaries on various cloud services (dropbox, google and others), to help practice and memorize the terms with in-built tests (flashcards, multiple choice) and even to automatically convert the lexicon into audio.

The text-to-speech function is available in a large number of languages and does not require an active internet connection: the sound files are downloaded on the device and remain available also when off-line.

Here are some screenshots from the app:

Preparing for a conference with bilingual audio files

Here is a nice system you can use to prepare for conferences. Just click on the audio file. Use headphones. The ear/voice span (decalage) can be easily modified to fit your translation style. I recently used this file to prepare for a conference on migration and evangelisation. You can make your own very easily.

My trip to India

I have just returned from a one month trip to India. I was truly impressed by those wonderful people. So calm despite the extreme misery they live in, yet incredibly rich in terms of their souls, of their commitment to religion, to God.

Beautiful women, especially in the more remote towns of central India where you can often see them carrying the most heavy loads of wood on their heads with the elegance of top models on a catwalk.

In the larger cities people dying of hunger and diseases have such wonderful eyes full of hope and dignity that make me think how small we westeners are who live in such opulence and yet are so poor in spirit.

Translation and interpreting procedures

The following is a list of translation procedures developed by Vinay, Darbelnet, Newmark and Catford. Although they were developed for written translations they can also apply to interpreting.
